Background

Tzvia is an adult Loggerhead sea- turtle and was admitted to the center in November 2016. He was found by the municipal veterinary services floating on his side in very shallow water near the beach. He was then brought to the center with the help of a Nature and Parks Authority ranger and one of the rescue center volunteers. Once he arrived, it was clear he was very week and in a serious state, with a fishing line coming out of his mouth, meaning he probably had ingested a fishing hook. The x-ray showed just that, with one hook lodged deep in the esophagus, which had to be removed with surgery. The line he had swallowed with the hook had over time continued deeper into the digestive system, causing serious blockages. It seems we found Tzvia just in time, much longer with this injury and he probably wouldn't have made it.

  • This map connects positions generated by the ARGOS system designated as location class (lc) '4', '3', '2', '1'. Locations that have been "filtered" are displayed as small red dots.
  • This maps also shows locations of class 'A', 'B', 'Z', 'X' as small black dots which are not connected by a route line.
  • Bathymetry layers are derived from the GEBCO One Minute Grid.
  • Sea surface temperature and chlorophyll are derived from NASA's Ocean Color data.
  • Ocean currents and sea surface heights are derived from AVISO's Ssalto/Duacs Gridded Absolute Dynamic Topography & absolute geostrophic velocities data.
