The turtle was equipped with a CTD SRDL tag through which it will be possible not only to monitor the turtle’s movements and behaviour but also to sample vital environmental parameters that characterize the turtle's habitat (e.g. temperature, salinity, chlorophyll concentration). Ultimately, this research will contribute to our understanding of how turtles utilize their habitats and which factors influence their behaviour and movements.

Background

This turtles was rescued with obvious difficulties to dive. Upon arrival at the rescue center a Columbus crab was detected near the tail and removed. A thorough health screening at the rescue center revealed no health problems aside from the fact that the turtle defecated some plastic material. After it commenced to feed and defecate regularly it was released again after one month at the rescue center.

  • This map connects positions generated by the ARGOS system designated as location class (lc) '3', '2', '1', 'B'. Locations that have been "filtered" are displayed as small red dots.
  • This maps also shows locations of class '0', 'A' as small black dots which are not connected by a route line.
  • Bathymetry layers are derived from the GEBCO One Minute Grid.
  • Sea surface temperature and chlorophyll are derived from NASA's Ocean Color data.
  • Ocean currents and sea surface heights are derived from AVISO's Ssalto/Duacs Gridded Absolute Dynamic Topography & absolute geostrophic velocities data.
