The bulk of the turtles tracked have been reasonably sedentary during their inter-nesting periods, but Lower Mary has been a real wanderer and traveled hundreds of kilometers each time:

1) She nested on the night of 18th November 2017, 6.07km West of Sandy Cape, and we put her on the trailer after she had completed laying her eggs and covering the egg chamber.

After release the next day, she hung around the NW beach till the 30th November and then she headed south into Hervey Bay, and on the midnight low tide of 4th December she basked on the mud-flats in the Go-slow Zone just south west of Big Woody Island.
On the 5th she began heading up the West coast of K'gari again, and swam back up to lay her next clutch:
2) She nested 2.5km West of Sandy Cape on 9th December - a re-nesting interval of 17 days, and a swim of at least 192km.

On the 13th she began a swim down the East Coast of the Island, crossed the Wide Bay Bar, and went almost to Tin Can Bay on the 22nd, turned around an headed 1/3 of the way back up the Island's coast before nesting:
3) She laid her third clutch 4.8km north of the Eurong Information Center on the night of the 25th December, a re-nesting interval of 16 days and a swim of at least 220km.

She continued northwards and was off Waddy Point on the 31st December and near Ngkala Rocks on 1st January 2018.

The tracker and 6 months of ARGOS data for both "Burnett Mary" and "Lower Mary" and the Sandy Cape Lighthouse Volunteers' all-purpose trailer have been sponsored by the Lower Mary River Land and Catchment Care Group Inc (LMRL&CCG) through the Burnett Mary Regional Group for Natural Resource Management (BMRG), through funding from the Australian Government’s National Landcare Programme.

  • This map connects positions generated by the ARGOS system designated as location class (lc) '3', '2', '1', '0', 'A', 'B'. Locations that have been "filtered" are displayed as small red dots.
  • This maps also shows locations of class 'A' as small black dots which are not connected by a route line.
  • Bathymetry layers are derived from the GEBCO One Minute Grid.
  • Sea surface temperature and chlorophyll are derived from NASA's Ocean Color data.
  • Ocean currents and sea surface heights are derived from AVISO's Ssalto/Duacs Gridded Absolute Dynamic Topography & absolute geostrophic velocities data.
