Background

This ~ 6 metre long male shark was named "Roger" following a naming competition at the 2017 Ningaloo Whale Shark Festival. Mathew Bentley, Carl Frischmuth and Shelley Fynn, Melanie Edwards and Annie Whitlocke entered the name "Roger" or "Roger Swainston for the following reasons: "Roger is one of the most famous and dedicated fish painter in Australia and he has been painting fishes since more than 35 years showing the world how beautiful marine life is", "Named after a very talented local WA individual who has dedicated their life to drawing and studying Marine fauna. His unique work can be found in nearly any good fish ID chart/book, in the WA museum or fisheries website and printouts", "Roger is an awesome artist and person", "dedicated to the most amazing ocean life artist i know!", "Roger has devoted his life to recording these species and more. For no need for reward but because he sees their potential demise and appreciates their role and their beauty."
