Background

Maya Angelou is a sub-adult, loggerhead sea turtle that was caught in an active dredge on July 30th, 2015 while it was deepening the York Spit Channel in Chesapeake Bay. Maya sustained multiple fractures to the rear of the carapace and plastron, and severe bruising and swelling to all appendages. The Virginia Aquarium Stranding Response staff admitted Maya to the Marine Animal Care Center, where Maya was stabilized. Maya needed surgical repair of a marginal carapace fracture and intense, long-term wound care. After more than a year undergoing rehabilitation (460 days), Mayas fractures have healed and stabilized. The US Army Corps of Engineers is interested in monitoring where Maya travels after the interaction with the dredge. Maya is outfitted with a satellite tag and was released at the oceanfront in Virginia Beach, VA on November 2, 2016.
