Background

Sachem was captured by Manomet staff in the Marshes associated with Lieutenant Island in Wellfleet, Massachusetts on September 11, 2017. We attached a 5 gram solar powered transmitter to her lower back with a leg-loop harness. we will be receiving location data from this bird for several years if she can survive the hazards of migration. This young bird was named for the Algonquian Indian word for a paramount chief who represents a tribe or group of bands. Since Whimbrel are in the shorebird tribe Numeniini, and the juvenile bird we captured represents all of the other young Whimbrel in the Wellfleet marshes, we thought it was an appropriate name. We anticipate this bird will leave Massachusetts toward the end of September and fly down over the Atlantic Ocean to somewhere in the Caribbean or north coast of South America. Sachem is on her first migration to wintering grounds.
