Introduction

The Bulgaria-U.S. Red-breasted Goose Project is a partnership between the U.S. Fish & Widlife Service, Le Balkan Bulgaria Foundation, and Bulgaria Ministry of Environment focused on conserving the endangered red-breasted goose which nests in Siberia and winters primarily in northeastern Bulgaria. The objectives of this satellite telemetry project are to better define migration routes, identify stop over sites, and assess winter ground movements.

Project Partners

Le Balkan Bulgaria Foundation was established in 1995 as an outgrowth of Le Balkan, an NGO established in France in 1992 to promote nature protection. The focus of Le Balkan Bulgaria Foundation is conservation of red-breasted geese and other endangered bird species residing in the Dobrudja region of Bulgaria. The Bulgaria Ministry of Environment is responsible for nature conservation and managing the National Park System of Bulgaria. The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, Division of International Conservation, supports international conservation projects through its Wildlife Without Border grant programs and technical support which are focused on rhinos, tigers, elephants, great apes, marine turtles, amphibians and othere critically imperiled species. The philosophy of the Wildlife Without Borders program is to build capacity and empower national governmental and non-governmental wildlife conservation institutions while expanding conservation programs throughout the world.
