Introduction

The Southwestern Atlantic Ocean is an important developmental area for juvenile loggerhead sea turtles. Previous research has shown that individuals belonging to diverse nesting populations congregate at this productive area to feed.

This area is also exploited by several pelagic longline fleets, which incidentally capture juvenile loggerhead sea turtles in large numbers throughout the entire year. The capture rates reported for this region are among the highest worldwide. The Uruguayan pelagic longline fleet (targeting mainly swordfish, tunas and sharks) has been continuously monitored by the Programa Nacional de Observadores Abordo de la Flota Atunera Uruguaya (PNOFA) since 1998. PNOFA’s scientific observers record data of the catch as well as fishing gear and operative.

Since early 2008, PNOFA observers have deployed a total of 13 PTTs (SPOT and SPLASH (Wildlife Computers)) on juvenile loggerhead sea turtles captured as bycatch in Uruguay's pelagic longline fishery. The aims of this study are to understand the movements and habitat use of satellite tracked loggerhead sea turtles and their overlap with fisheries operating in the Southwestern Atlantic Ocean. Additionally, tracking data will be used to evaluate the lethal and sub-lethal effects of a capture event on these turtles.
