Introduction
The Center of Studies and Care of Sea Turtles of La Rochelle Aquarium has got 3 objectives : the rescue, the rehabilitation and the release of injured and beached sea turtles along the Atlantic coast.
Since 1990, 160 sea turtles beached have been tagged and released from La Rochelle.
Last year, in 2008, Aquarium La Rochelle made the first satellite tracking of juvenile loggerhead on the french atlantic coast. To continue this projet, 5 new juvenile will be release with a PTT for better understanding their behavior :
- tracking juvenile Caretta caretta through the Atlantic Ocean
- Knowing the time necessary for a juvenile sea turtle to leave the Bay of Biscay
-Identify their zone of residence
Project Partners
In 2009, the French Marine Protected Areas Agency and the french governement space agency (Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales) join the Aquarium La Rochelle to make this second satellite tracking on 5 sea turtles possible.
The association E.C.O.L.E. de la Mer will help the teachers and childs to follow the tracking of sea turtles
