Introduction

Two hawksbill turtles nesting on South Mahé were tagged with MK10 AF satellite tags during the 2007-08 Nesting Season. One turtle was killed by poachers but the other turtle, named Carol, confirmed inter-beach nesting and revealed a long distance migration to her feeding grounds in neighbouring Madagascar.

During the 2009-10 nesting season, another 2 turtles were tagged.

Tracking data are available to educators to use to help raise awareness of hawksbill turtles in Seychelles, particularly on the developed islands where their habitats are most threatened.

Project Partners

Our project partners in this are the Marine Unit of the Ministry of Environment (Seychelles), local schools and the Wildlife Clubs of Seychelles who are participating in various projects and competitions centered around the hawksbill turtle.

Project Sponsors

The main project sponsor in 2007 was Barclays Bank Seychelles who committed not only financial resources but also staff time to help with awareness activities and to leverage additional support from their corporate clients. Simpson's Strong-Tie (Asia) have kindly sponsored the epoxy for tag attachment as no suitable products were available locally. Xanadu Private Resort accommodated the team free of charge during the deployment expedition in the South of Mahé.

The tags deployed in 2009 tags were sponsored by the MCSS Whale shark Encounter Trips. Wildlife Club Seychelles (WCS) provided logistical support. Banyan Tree Resort accommodated the team free of charge and Xanadu Private Resort granted permission to the nesting site in South Mahé.
