Beachfront Lighting Pamphlet Available

A new pamphlet entitled "Sea Turtles and Lights" has been produced through the cooperative efforts of the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) (formerly Department of Natural Resources) and the Florida Power and Light Company. The pamphlet was written by Dr. Blair Witherington, a DEP researcher funded by a grant from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. He has worked extensively on the problems caused by lighting on sea turtle nesting beaches. Beachfront lighting deters nesting turtles from coming ashore, leads hatchlings away from the ocean to their deaths, and continues to be a serious sea turtle conservation problem. The pamphlet summarizes for non-scientists the problems associated with lighting and provides a number of solutions to reduce the impacts of lighting on sea turtles. This pamphlet is available from: Office of Protected Species Management, 3900 Commonwealth Blvd., Tallahassee, Florida 32399 USA; or by calling (within USA) 1-800-342-5375.
