Southwood
This photo was taken at Sandy Point National Wildlife Refuge, St. Croix, US Virgin Islands. Researchers from the Univ. of North Carolina Wilmington attached a satellite-linked transmitter to the turtle, named "Southwood", to study its movements and foraging behavior. Southwood had a curved carapace length of 155 cm and was named after Dr. Amanda Southwood, Assistant Professor at the Univ. of North Carolina Wilmington. This photo was taken on 28-May-2008 after Southwood traveled a minimum straight-line distance of 406 km during an 8 day internesting period. The transmitter is not shown in the photo because it was removed following Southwood's return to SPNWR.
