Purple Cloaca

I am a research assistant for the National Park Service in St. Croix, VI. This hawksbill was seen nesting on Buck Island Reef National Monument. Her tail was missing and her cloaca was retracted and purple in color. The first egg dropped about 80 minutes after she had started laying.
