East Coast Biologists, Inc.

Founded in October 2002, East Coast Biologists, Inc. (ECB), is a not-for-profit organization that conducts and supports scientific research and education. Employees of ECB are researchers and biologists whose focus is on scientific research of marine communities. The majority of its members are graduate biologists and professionals with experience or expertise in marine and terrestrial ecosystems. Collectively, this group has over 75 years of academic and professional scientific experience. Areas of support and research include nesting and in-water marine turtle research, herpetological research/monitoring, small mammal population studies, marine fish and invertebrate research, seagrass and macroalgal research and monitoring, and beach restoration. The majority of funding is from scientific research grants, and local and state government contracts. The mission of ECB is to support environmental research, monitoring, and education on a local and global scale for the benefit of preserving and maintaining natural resources for present and future generations.

Paso Pacifico's mission is to restore and conserve the natural ecosystems of Central America's Pacific slope, collaborating with landowners, local communities, and involved organizations to promote ecosystem conservation.

Paso Pacifico envisions a Central American landscape where well-managed conservation areas are connected by a series of corridors along the Pacific slope: tropical dry forest restored and connected to coastal and marine protected areas as well as to communities which benefit economically from eco-tourism and sustainable agriculture.

Paso Pacifico began the community-based sea turtle conservation program called “Tortugas Marinas del Paso del Istmo”. A team of community rangers was formed and they received training from international experts in protected areas management and sea turtle monitoring. Community rangers now work around the clock protecting turtle nests at two beaches. Paso Pacífico also began a program of performance-based ‘incentive payments for conservation’ program involving payments to the community and individuals for the successful care and hatching of sea turtle eggs. The incentive program continues today. Community members protect solitary nests at several local beaches in exchange for a small payment upon claiming a nest and a large payment once the nest has successfully hatched. Paso

Pacifico conducts monitoring of the sea turtles and beaches where community rangers work. We are also developing a tourism program related to coastal-marine ecosystems and to date we have trained over fifteen community ecotourism guides and training is underway for six guides who will lead sea kayaking tours. Partnerships with local communities and other organizations is key to our success. For example, in partnership with the Ocean Conservancy, we coordinate Nicaragua’s International Coastal Clean-up Day at over twenty beaches across Nicaragua.
