Sugerimos que los trabajos a presentar apunten a enriquecer la investigación en tortugas marinas realizada en la región del Atlántico Sur Occidental, aportando información novedosa y resultados originales. Los trabajos presentados después de la fecha límite no se incluirán en el libro de resúmenes por cuestiones de edición e impresión.

Las cinco especies de tortugas marinas del Pacífico suroriental están catalogadas por diversas organizaciones nacionales e internacionales como en peligro. Por ser animales altamente migratorios, las tortugas marinas son recursos compartidos: su conservación eficaz depende de la cooperación entre países, ministerios, organizaciones y múltiples actores. Los gobiernos de Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Panamá y Perú han aceptado, a través de diferentes acuerdos internacionales y regionales, además de diferentes leyes y reglamentos nacionales, proveer protección tanto a estos reptiles como a los diferentes hábitats de los cuales dependen. Este evento mantiene vínculos con el Programa Regional para la Conservación de las Tortugas Marinas en el Pacífico Sudeste, iniciativa regional liderada por la Comisión Permanente del Pacífico Sur, y aprobada por las Partes del Convenio de Lima en 2007.

En este contexto se realizará el III Simposio Regional sobre tortugas marinas en el Pacífico Suroriental que tiene como objetivo actualizar los conocimientos y difundir las investigaciones que sobre tortugas marinas se están realizando en la región, por lo cual invitamos a participar de este evento a investigadores, universidades, organizaciones gubernamentales y no gubernamentales y al público en general.

Se espera apoyar a los participantes, por lo menos parcialmente, con transporte y/o alojamiento y alimentación. Próximamente se enviará una segunda Panamá y Perú han aceptado, a través convocatoria con más información y detalles sobre el evento tales como el calendario, envío de resúmenes, becas, etc.

At this point I am interested in people with direct, long-term experience with turtle head starting programs who would be willing to present papers on their work. I already have a large number of excellent participants, but we are unfortunately lacking in talks concerning sea turtles.

My goals are to encourage people involving in turtle head-starting projects to address academic concerns concerning hard-starting, to compare a series of examples of serious head-starting projects using a common set of criteria for success, to learn which, if any, conservation practices are more likely to lead to success. It is not the goal of this symposium to present head-starting as the solution to all turtle conservation problems, or even to promote head-starting itself. I specifically intend to invite some critics of head-starting to speak as well as practitioners, in an effort to promote dialogue.

Head-starting is sometimes a controversial topic in turtle conservation that has received little serious academic examination. Here I am focusing on head-starting itself, that is, the release of captive -raised hatchlings for conservation purposes. I am distinguishing head-starting from translocation generally, which can also include releases of wild-caught adults.

Please let me know if you would like to join very diverse team of professionals from around the world in discussing this important topic. Of course there will be many other papers on turtles and turtle conservation at the JMIH meetings, so this should be fun and educational for all. I expect to publish either a multi-authored book or that we will publish the papers as a group in a journal.

Sclerochronology is the study of physical and chemical variations in the accretionary hard tissues of organisms, and the temporal context in which they formed. Sclerochronology focuses primarily upon growth patterns reflecting annual, monthly, fortnightly, tidal, daily, and sub-daily increments of time entrained by a host of environmental and astronomical pacemakers. Familiar examples include yearly banding in reef coral skeletons and otoliths or daily and annual growth patterns in mollusk shells. Sclerochronology is analogous to dendrochronology, the study of annual rings in trees, and equally seeks to deduce organismal life history traits as well as to reconstruct records of environmental and climatic change through time and space. Opportunities for Participation

Conference attendees are invited to present in one of three ways.

All offered papers will be presented as key findings (see description below).

I. Key Findings Presentations are intended to provide a synopsis of important findings from your work and should focus on key findings and conclusions. Managerial case studies are welcome.

Goals:

* To present to conference attendees the breadth of current projects in human dimensions of fish and wildlife research and management.
* To provide specific examples or approaches to integrating human dimensions into fish and wildlife management as related to the conference themes.

Key Findings Presentations will be limited to a 15-minute presentation per person with additional time for questions from the audience. Time limits will be strictly enforced. We strongly recommend no more than 20 PowerPoint slides per presentation. Presenters are encouraged to bring more in-depth papers to pass out at the conference as a follow-up to their presentation. Abstracts from the Key Findings Presentations will be published on the conference CD. All oral presentations are limited to Microsoft PowerPoint only; no other formats will be accepted.

II. Photo Atlas Entries include submissions of a compelling human/wildlife interaction photo and an accompanying description of the management problem surrounding the human-wildlife issue as well as the how human dimensions science and inquiry has guided management response. Entries will compete for top awards at the conference competition and inclusion in the published photo atlas. In order to increase awareness of the human dimensions field the photo atlas publication will take its readers on a tour of the human-wildlife relationships and conflicts around the world.

III. Symposia offer the opportunity for attendees to organize a series of presentations related to any of the conference themes. Oral symposia will be comprised of 4-6 paper presentations with a suggested time limit of 15 minutes per speaker. Roundtable, panel discussions and other formats are also welcome. Speakers are scheduled according to the organizer's preferences. Symposia are scheduled to run concurrently with other conference sessions.

Making Marine Science Matter

The Marine Section of the Society for Conservation Biology will be hosting the Second International Marine Conservation Congress (IMCC2)
from 14-18 May 2011 at the Victoria Convention Centre, British Columbia, Canada.

New themes for this conference include:

• Innovative techniques and technology for marine conservation;
• The Human dimension for marine conservation;
• Advancing marine conservation through International treaties;
• The changing Arctic;
• Marine conservation awareness and outreach;
• Climate and the changing oceans;
• Sustainable fisheries and aquaculture;
• Conservation at the land/sea interface; and
• Effective Marine Spatial Planning.


During interactive symposia and workshops, we will challenge participants to go beyond one-way communication. Each of these sessions will address specific topics within major themes and develop innovative solutions to current conservation challenges. Symposium organizers will invite a select group of speakers and devise creative ways to facilitate discussion.

Workshops will consist of multi-disciplinary teams focused on crafting policy and management recommendations, briefings, conservation action plans, white papers or peer-reviewed publications.

The Congress organizers can also assist agencies, NGOs and other groups to organize receptions and academic or social events with a
variety of venues available, including rooms at the conference center, at the adjacent Empress Hotel or the nearby Maritime Museum.

The Congress will open on 14th May with an evening reception at the Shaw Ocean Centre, Sidney BC, near Victoria. The event will close on
the evening of 18th May with a final reception at the Royal BC Museum, Victoria.

The first International Marine Conservation Congress was held on 20-24 May 2009 at George Mason University near Washington D.C. The meeting brought over 1,200 scientists, managers and policy-makers together, with over 16 simultaneous conference sessions, symposia and workshops, and over twenty associated events, training sessions and activities, making it one of the largest academic marine conservation conferences ever held. Don’t miss the opportunity to be a part of the next step in this critical process!

The conference will take place in Naples (Italy) from November 7-10, 2011, and will be organised by the Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn (SZN) in collaboration with the Regional Activity Centre for Specially Protected Areas (RAC/SPA).

The Stazione Zoologica is a public research institute specialised in the field of marine biology. Among its various research lines the SZN has been active in the conservation, research and rescue of marine turtles since the mid 1980's and is now running one of the Mediterraneans biggest rescue and rehabilitation centres. As nominated Action Plan Partner of the Action Plan for the Conservation of Mediterranean Marine Turtles, and in close cooperation with the RAC/SPA, the Stazione Zoologica has collaborated with many countries in the Mediterranean, always aiming to preserve our valuable populations and combat the threats to marine turtles . It is my greatest pleasure to finally have the opportunity to gather all Mediterranean people who share our interests at the forthcoming 4th Conference.

With the launch of the conference in this prestigious institute, we intend above all to deepen our knowledge on marine turtles in the Mediterranean, in particular by encouraging the new generations to deal with the problems of marine turtles from a scientific approach. Therefore, we hope most of all to receive many contributions from young researchers.

A full array of associated events are being planned, including specialized workshops, social dinner with music and traditional dance, post-conference sightseeing tours, and lots of chances to come together, discuss turtles, and enjoy the Neapolitan cultural and culinary variety.

The conference venue is the newly opened Porta del ParcoConference Centre in Bagnoli just 5 km distant to the main institute of the Stazione Zoologica. The Conference Centre was chosen, because it is close to the SZN Turtle Point Rehabilitation Centre inside the same area which is currently being transformed into an urban park. Information and updates on the conference, registration and abstract guidelines and other related issues will be made available on the conferences website, which will be hosted by the RAC/SPA under www.medconf.rac-spa.org . Regular announcements and updates will also be posted through the Turtle Community's listservs (MEDTURTLE, CTURTLE, etc.).

This time the conference will also have a Theme which aims at uniting all countries in their experience in the history, research and conservation of marine turtles. I invite you to embark on a A Turtle Odysseyto follow turtles of our sea from ancient myth to modern exploitation. Inspired by Homers famous poem on the Greek hero Ulysses and his long journey home, four major themes can be identified that find their equivalence in present research and conservation efforts: the first subject is obviously that of Homecoming, which applies to the turtlesnatal philopatry and the related homing migrations. The theme of Deception as a peril is portrayed in the Odyssey by the sirens who lure sailors to their deaths by seduction. Likewise, turtles are deceived by many dangers throughout their life, including fishing baits, plastic bags and warming seas in non hospitable areas. Another significant theme is that of Disguise, meaning concealed identities, which is prominent in many aspects of turtle biology, anatomy (e.g. age and sex discrimination), and genetics (e.g. origins). Finally, Hospitality is a fundamental theme, representing each countrys responsibility to provide healthy habitats and protect the turtles during their stay.

According to these main themes of the Turtle Odyssey the scientific program of the 4th Mediterranean Conference will be organised in the following sessions:

· Breeding Biology and Movements (Homecoming)

· Threats (Deception)

· Anatomy, Physiology, Behaviour and Genetics (Concealed Identities)

· Habitat Management and Conservation Measures (Hospitality)

In addition to these four regular sessions we are planning a special session dedicated to health issues and veterinary medicine of marine turtles, to accommodate the need for scientific exchange in this developing area of research which has important implications for the conservation measures to reduce turtle mortality.

A call for abstract submissions to these thematic sessions will soon be published on the conference's website along with detailed session descriptions which will help the presenters to identify the appropriate session for each contribution. The deadline for abstract submissions is foreseen for the 15th of May 2011.

I must express my gratitude and recognize my local Organizing Committee and supporting organisations consisting of Abderrahmen Gannoun (Barcelona Convention), Atef Ouerghi (RAC/SPA, Tunis, Tunisia), Borja Heredia (Convention of Migratory Species - Bonn Convention), Eladio Fernandez-Galiano (Bern Convention) and a representative of the Italian Ministry of Environment, which will be nominated shortly.

Naples is a city that is full of life and that has strong ties with its historical and cultural roots. Many attractive places can be visited, including historical monuments such as Europes oldest theatre San Carlo and nearby archaeological sites of Ercolaneum and Pompeii or the volcano Vesuvio. Those who fancy a stroll through Naples historical centre in the period before Christmas when local artisanal shops offer their famous Neapolitan Presepi (nativity scenes), will be rewarded by its colourful street life and can enjoy the Italian cuisine in one of the numerous Trattorias and Pizzerias.

The Brazilian Workshop of Sea Turlte Fibropapillomatosis is an initiative of Marcos Daniel Institute, and aims to promote the exchange of experience and information between the various research groups studying this disease in Brazil. The event will be held in Vitoria, Espírito Santo on 29, 30 and 31 May 2014. The workshop will be directed to academics, researchers and professionals, and will have the following structure: six lectures a round-table discussion and a field trip in the area of the final effluent of a steel mill, where is performed a 13 years disease monitoring program of Chelonia mydas by the TAMAR project. The Workshop will involve researchers and representatives of the various groups related to the subject in Brazil.

The 2nd Southeast Regional Sea Turtle Meeting will highlight marine turtle activities that occur in the southeastern United States, from Virginia through Texas. Our second conference will be held at the Jekyll Island Convention Center located beachside. The Convention Center is also just a short drive from our gracious host, The Georgia Sea Turtle Center (GSTC). GSTC is the only sea turtle rehabilitation center in the state of Georgia and frequently accepts turtles from neighboring states. In addition, conservation measures were established that allow tourists access to the beach during the day, in an area away from the main nesting zone.
