I got a call around 5pm on Wednesday from Stacy Kubis of Widecast. She and Scott Eckert had found an injured loggerhead floating in the channel near their office at the Duke University Marine Lab, and had brought it back in a canoe. I took it with me and tried to slowly warm it up while arranging for a wildlife vet to check it over. Luckily, Dr. Pam Govett was in town, and she spent several hours stabilizing the turtle. I brought it home to keep overnight, and this morning, Wendy Cluse will pick it up and transfer it to the Veterinary School Hospital in Raleigh, where the turtle team will work on repairing the carapace. After that, it will be transferred to the Karen Beasley Rehabilitation Center in Topsail for its long recovery period and eventual release.
Just another example of the intricate web that has been created to deal with injured or sick sea turtles in North Carolina.

Are those cracks in the carapace from a boat encounter? Ouch! I'd be very interested in seeing how the turtle's carapace looks after surgery. Good luck to Dr. Govett, as it looks like it's going to be a challenge to "put Humpty Dumpty back together again."
