Widgets Update

I have updated the Image Library widget once again and added some additional options. You can use these widgets to easily add dynamic content from the Image Library on seaturtle.org in to your own web pages.

Last 10 photos in plastic category

Note that you cannot put more than one photo widget on a page or they will conflict with each other.

If you are interested in including other categories from the Image Library in your website just let me know.

Similarly you can include a news widget that includes the latest sea turtle related headlines from seaturtle.org's news section.

You can also get nesting widgets by following these instructions from the Sea Turtle Nest Monitoring System.

Tracking Satellites

Here's a site making really cool use of google maps to track satellites.

It would be even better if you could get it to track more than one satellite at a time! But great idea.

Public Sea Turtle Watches

One of the most frequent questions I get is "where can I go to see sea turtles." This is a bit of a tricky topic. Sea turtles require special treatment because they are protected by the Endangered Species Act and various local and international laws. You can't just tell people where turtles are so they can go see them on their own.

Fortunately there are a number of places that people can go to see sea turtles in a controlled setting. Accredited aquaria are a perfect example. But you can't beat the experience and educational potential of seeing turtles in the wild (so to speak).

I just happened across a great resource on the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission website. A list of organizations permitted to conduct public sea turtle walks.

It strikes me that a centralized database of institutions with organized activities where the public can see sea turtles would be a very valuable resource.

Hmm...

If anyone knows of similar resources available for other states or countries, please let me know.

Links Subscriptions

The links on seaturtle.org have a similar subscription system to the one I described for the seaturtle.org news. Perhaps one of the most underutilized sections of the site, the links are managed by Paul Mikkelsen who use to manage a links site of his own until we chatted and decided to join forces.

News Subscriptions

You may or may not have noticed a recent surge over the last couple of months in the number of news items posted to the News section of seaturtle.org. This is because of a new addition to the system that scours google news and notifies our News Editor, Kelly Samek, when there are new items to be posted. The end result, the postings in the news section should be a much more thorough and useful resource.

Now to the tip.
