Ebay Schmeebay

They say that people will buy anything on ebay.

Bah!

I'm here to tell you it ain't so. I've only ever tried to sell two things on ebay. A brand new usb camera that I bought about three years ago and ended up not liking. That sold. Fine. Unfortunately I listed what I thought was a very nice bed last week that just closed without a single bid. Amazing when you see all the goofy things that people try to sell, AND that other people actually buy.

Bah!

If anyone is interested in an antique bed let me know.

Where will Samia go?

Samia, the loggerhead sea turtle, is on the move. She is being tracked as part of the Green and Loggerhead Turtles: Cayman Islands 2003 Project in SEATURTLE.ORG's Satellite Tracking section.

Do you know where she is going? Post your guesses in the comments section below!

Shark!

Another shot from St. John...

That was the first thing I thought when I first saw this thing coming at me out of the corner of my eye. About six feet long and coming right at me... YIKES! Then I realized it was just a nurse shark. I was in the middle of a survey so it took me a minute to get my camera up and snap the picture. So you see it swimming away from me and the perspective makes it look smaller than it really is.

Narcissistic Tendencies?

Do I have them? How else would you explain this blog?

The ultimate expression of this is the new bit I added to my blog menu... a list of the music I am listening to. What is my problem?

FWIW, I don't think I'm narcissistic, I just have difficulty not playing with toys. This was an easy one. Just downloaded a copy of Kung-Tunes and then took about 10 minutes to add to appropriate code to my blog to make it show up.

Argh!

Better late than never

I promised some pics from my St. John trip in a post long ago, one problem after the other and I finally got the images off the camera yesterday (nobody could find the USB cable to connect the camera to the computer).

So here is the first one, a giant permit (Trachinotus falcatus). My guess is about 70 cm or so in length. The second shot shows it swimming over my quadrat which is 1 meter-square. That's about the biggest permit I've seen, and particularly interesting since it's swimming in about 2 feet of water. It had an entourage of about 5 other fish of different species until I spooked them trying to get this picture. We were doing a survey over a (mostly dead) stand of Acropora palmata (elkhorm coral). You can see one live bit in the background of the second shot.

In the course of putting this entry together I came across something quite humorous. Try looking up Trachinotus falcatus on reference.com and just follow where it leads...

More to come...
