2004 Symposium Wrap-up
When all was said and done 842 people had registered for the 24th sea turtle symposium in Costa Rica. Some unknown number of those did not show up, and there were some unregistered local dignitaries and press in attendance, so the actual number is a bit amorphous.
About 77 countries were represented. The countries with the greatest representation included:
US: 391
Costa Rica: 76
Mexico: 44
UK: 19
Guatemala: 18
Colombia: 17
Spain: 16
Venezuela: 15
Australia: 14
Canada: 14
India: 11
Puerto Rico: 11
Uruguay: 11
Cuba: 10
Overall a rousing success, with a few minor hiccups. Fortunately turtle people tend to be flexible and as far as I could tell everyone just went with the flow.
For some reason the social aspects of the meeting seemed to be emphasized. Perhaps it was because so many people didn't make it last year, but I definitely was able to spend more time chatting with colleagues than usual. So it was easy to catch up. Also easy to make new friends.
