Better late than never
I promised some pics from my St. John trip in a post long ago, one problem after the other and I finally got the images off the camera yesterday (nobody could find the USB cable to connect the camera to the computer).
So here is the first one, a giant permit (Trachinotus falcatus). My guess is about 70 cm or so in length. The second shot shows it swimming over my quadrat which is 1 meter-square. That's about the biggest permit I've seen, and particularly interesting since it's swimming in about 2 feet of water. It had an entourage of about 5 other fish of different species until I spooked them trying to get this picture. We were doing a survey over a (mostly dead) stand of Acropora palmata (elkhorm coral). You can see one live bit in the background of the second shot.
In the course of putting this entry together I came across something quite humorous. Try looking up Trachinotus falcatus on reference.com and just follow where it leads...
More to come...
