That is one of the cool things about modern art: it forces you to question what exactly is Art anyway? And who decides if it is art? The artist? The viewer? The media? It is an interesting debate and Marcel Duchamp (often considered the father of modern art) was one of the first to openly ask these kinds of questions and probe the boundaries of art with his scuptures and paintings. For more info on his life, work and ideas:

The kinds of art and astists described in the article by DB put me more of the mind of con artists than anything else. And the people that pay public funds for the stuff must either be con artists themselves or really stupid. It's sort of like PETA, makes everyone else in the field look bad.

hmmm, it is always so subjective: what is good art and what is not? Surely not everyone is going to agree about art, but I would rather that some "con" artists receive funding along with more acceptable artists, than have the funding be highly restricted to only "real" or "good" art....anyway, it's just my 2¢, and what the heck do I know about art anyway?

My point exactly! What do you know about art :)

Seriously, can't say I know much about it either except what I like and don't like. I have to say that things like randomly splattering paint on something and placing a perfectly normal everyday object in a room and cally it art has always seemed pretty silly to me. Strikes me as people who don't have enough to do. Of course a lot of people would probably say the same about me and most of what I do.
