Background

I have worked on turtles for close to 20 years, and spent time working on projects in Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Bahrain, Oman, the Maldives, Vietnam, Malaysia, Palau, Papua New Guinea and a host of other places. I am now Co-Chair of IUCN's Marine Turtle Specialist Group, and the founding director of the Marine Research Foundation, a non-profit research and conservation agency based in Borneo.

Expertise

I have worked with green, loggerhead, hawksbill, olive ridley and leatherback turtles, particularly developing practical conservation strategies and reviewing current management input to streamline these to bring them in line with the actual biology of the turtles themselves. I carry out laparoscopy examinations of gonads to look at gender and reporductive status, and work with hatchlings on offshore migration and survival issues. In particular, I work with groups throughout the Indo-Pacific to develop conservation strategies that work on the ground.

Location

I am based in a town called Kota Kinabalu, in Sabah, Malaysia, which lies on the island of Borneo.
